How was the Northern Illinois University gunman able to buy weapons with a mental-health history?

I’ve been reading stories the past couple days about Steven Kazmierczak, the former student who purchased guns before killing five people and himself at Northern illinois University on Thursday. How was this guy able to buy guns legally since he had been on psychiatric medications? Can someone with a psychiatric history purchase weapons as long as they don’t have any criminal convictions? Or did this guy lie on his application? The stories I’ve seen seemed to indicate that he bought the guns legally.

Here we go again…..
The "Take away the guns" nuts are back

Fourth Amendment folks…..nothing else needs to be said

get over it
stop worrying about everyone else
and take some personal responsibility

i live in Il, i am on medication for mild depression and ADD (wellbutrin xl). i own 2 guns (a beretta 92fs handgun, and a WW2 mosin nagant russian rifle). i even have a minor criminal history (drunk driving). i bought both of these guns legally. i have never been commited to a mental health facility, and have never been treated for a mental illness (other than the conditions i stated, both of which are common). i dont know what meds he was taking or what he was taking it for, but he probably had his FOID (firearm owners identification card) long before he got the guns. it is easy for people to legally get them as long as the dont have any mental health records or a criminal history (depending on the crimes). and for all of you reading this who think i shouldnt own guns cuz i take meds and have a dui, you need to realize that individuals are different, and that the majority of people should not be punished (unable to own guns for protection and leisure) just because of a few wackos who would have killed people anyways.

there must be a disconnect between the medical groups and the reporting of mental instability to the legal groups.
