SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The illinois Supreme Court on Wednesday denied an effort to remove Gov. Rod Blagojevich, rejecting what could have been the quickest way to force the Democrat from office. Blagojevich’s lawyer, meanwhile, said the governor would not appoint someone to fill Barack Obama’s vacant U.S. Senate seat, potentially answering one of the key questions surrounding the scandal. Federal wiretaps recorded Blagojevich talking about selling or trading Obama’s Senate seat, but Genson told the House committee that the words do not amount to illegal actions.
He called the wiretaps "two months of somebody who obviously likes to talk a lot, but two months of nothing getting done."
"There’s no evidence that anyone ever asked anybody for anything with regard to that (U.S. Senate) seat," Genson added.
Genson said it would be "frankly illegal" for the committee to base an impeachment recommendation on the criminal complaint against Blagojevich."

The senate seat issue wasn’t the only charge and the impeachment proceeding are moving forward.

I doubt this is over. I didn’t think the IL legislature would be able to force Blago from office anyway–there no legal precedent for it. Doesn’t mean he won’t be charged for other things.

Prosecutor Fitzgerald is almost amateurish in the suggestion of a certain conviction in the media. Broadcasters and talk shows are neither court rooms nor evidence.
In principle, if they had such a strong case, it would be tried discreetly in court, rather than in the media. The timing of events is opportunistic for members of the Department of Justice under the administration of President George W. Bush.
These attorneys are expecting to stay on as civil servants. It would look too peculiar to dismiss prosecutors in the midst of such a high profile investigation. This case is insurance.
This attempt to embarrass President Elect Barack Obama will not be easily forgotten.

I hope the world knows that this is the city Barack Obama started his own political career in, and is now President-elect. Scary, eh? This government "of the people, by the people, for the people" isn’t listening to the people anymore, now is it?

The court is not going to remove him at the Attorney General’s request. She was claiming that recent events left him unable to effectively do his job, akin to some kind of disability.
It was worth a try. But he is undoubtedly going to be impeached by the legislature, and he will eventually face criminal charges. So it’s hardly scot-free.
